The wind created tricky conditions, but the women on the ASP World Tour battled it out for the 6-Star Hunter Ports Women’s Classic Event at Merewether. All eyes were on Sally Fitzgibbons throughout the Surfest, as she earned high wave scores to push through her heats and take the win. This event offers precious points to boost Sally’s campaign for the ASP World Title 2012, as she currently stands equal third with fellow Australian Tyler Wright.
“As a 13-year-old we had a Pro Junior event here at Merewether and I was just a little grommet and I took it out, so Newcastle is a special place for me,” said Sally Fitzgibbons.
Malia Manuel stayed focused and surfed consistent in her heats. She took out fellow Hawaiian and reigning ASP World Champion Carissa Moore in the quarterfinals to meet Sally in the finals, but fell short, needing 4.70 more points to match Sally’s 16.70.
The women of the world tour will remain in Australia for the Rip Curl Women’s Pro at Bells Beach April 3-9, 2012.
