The first definition of Yoga in the dictionary is “a school of Hindu philosophy advocating and prescribing a course of physical and mental disciplines for attaining liberation from the material world and union of the self with the Supreme Being or ultimate principle. ” After reading that you are probably thinking, “Wow, that sounds like a mumbo jumbo of something that I could never understand” which is far from the truth. Yoga is a basic principle of calming the mind or “de-stressing” yourself and becoming aware of who are and everything around you – living in the moment opposed to being taken over by material objects. People who practice yoga do so for a variety of reasons, which is evident by the many different styles of yoga offered. Many people practice for the spirituality associated with yoga and the connection they feel with themselves and their world. Others practice to get in shape and feel great about who they are while enjoying more energy in their daily lives. And of course, many yogis practice for both these reasons and more!
Burton Snowboards team rider and Olympic Gold Medalist Hannah Teter is a prime example of the benefits that come from yoga. With her positive attitude, a healthy body and mind and a willingness to give to others, Hannah has been able to continue her efforts to help those in need around the globe. Through her charity Hannah’s Gold, Hannah is able to help provide children with safe drinking water in Kirindon, Kenya and to raise awareness of other needs in the community. She shows how important a healthy, active lifestyle goes hand in hand in helping reach personal goals. Hannah lives in a world of yoga, meditation, organic food, a vegetarian lifestyle and a love for others around the globe. With Hannah and her positive vibes, she is by far one of the strongest role models for girls out there today, and not just in the snowboard industry either!

The Shred Remains – MFR (07.27.11) – Editor: Jessie Wade
27 year-old Whistler-Blackcomb resort native Marie France-Roy, better known as MFR in the snowboarding industry, is one of the most versatile and progressive female riders around the world. MFR has been pushing the limits of female riding since she strapped on a board in 2001 and has never had trouble riding with the guys. Why? Because she rides like one. Park, Urban, Backcountry – she does it all. She is tough and fierce while on a board, and also one of the most down-to-earth, happy, joyous people you’d ever meet. Marie has won multiple ‘Rider of the Year’ titles from Transworld Media and has picked up numerous awards for her video parts in both Rome and Absinthe films over the years. She has another major part in the new Rome film ‘The Shred Remains’ which was two years in the making, and is slamming out it’s debut this fall.
She has also had her own signature snowboard boot, The Lashed, with Thirty-Two for years, as well as signature Madison bindings and the Lo-Fi snowboard from Rome, for as long as we can remember. You can find MFR’s new signature outerwear from Oakley this coming 2011 season as well, which reflects her earthy, natural style with technical fabrics to make a perfect fit for on hill riding. She became a team rider for the base layer company Cilla a few years ago and swears by nothing else for great layers to wear while on or off the hill. Cilla’s organic, sustainable, breathable fabrics such as bamboo and chitosante help your skin to stay dry, soft and comfortable while doing activities such as snowboarding, yoga, biking, running, camping and even just lounging around.
Some of her favorite things outside of snowboarding include her family, friends, and health. As well as mountain biking and mini-ramp skateboarding. A few of her favorite bands include Weezer, Rage Against The Machine, Anti-Flag and Pink Floyd, and if she was not a pro snowboarder she would be an environmentalist. MFR stays on Vancouver Island in the summer months and Whistler in the Winter. She lives by the quote “One Life”, and we can see why.
